Lucy is the Labour and Cooperative MP for Manchester Central and Shadow Leader of the House of Commons. She was delighted to take on the role and is looking forward to holding the government’s feet to fire, ensuring ministers are accountable to Parliament, and shaping Labour’s future legislative programme.

Previously, she was Shadow Culture Secretary, Shadow Secretary of State for Housing, and Shadow Minister for Business and Consumers on Keir Starmer’s frontbench. Following the 2019 General election, Lucy was one of the Commissioners on the Labour Together Review into the 2019 General election which set Labour on a path back to power. Lucy held previous roles as Shadow Secretary for Education, Labour’s Campaign Co-ordinator & Cabinet Office Secretary in 2015, and ran Ed Miliband’s campaign to be Leader in 2010.

Lucy was elected in a by-election on November 15^th 2012, becoming the first female Labour MP to represent a Manchester constituency and has campaigned on a range of issues through her time in Parliament, including on online safety, the cladding and building safety crisis, education & the early years, and joint enterprise. Before entering Parliament Lucy worked for NESTA – the innovation agency for social good, helping to secure investment into Manchester.

Lucy lives in Manchester with her children and her husband, James, who is an A&E doctor. She is a huge Man City and sports fan and tries to attend as many games as possible with her son. Her guilty pleasure is watching shows like Love Island with her daughter.
